The Reef Is the Reason

Most destinations do not really need aerial photography. A beach in Spain looks like a beach from the ground and looks like a beach from the air. Mauritius is different, and the reason is geological: the island sits inside an almost continuous coral reef, which creates a shallow lagoon between the shore and the breaking surf. That lagoon is a colour you will struggle to describe to someone who has not seen it, and the boundary where it meets deep ocean is a clean, hard line.

From the ground, none of that is visible. You see water going out to a horizon. From a hundred metres up you see the whole structure at once — sand, coral heads, the pale shallows, the reef break, then a wall of dark blue. That one frame communicates where you were more effectively than a hundred ground-level photographs, which is why it ends up being the image people print, and the image hotels put at the top of their homepage.

There are places where the aerial view reveals something you genuinely cannot otherwise perceive. At Le Morne, sand channels running off the shelf create the famous underwater waterfall illusion — visible only from height and at the right sun angle. At Blue Bay, the marine park's coral structure reads straight through the water. These are not novelty shots; they are the strongest images the island offers.

Included Free — Not a €300 Add-On

Most photographers in Mauritius treat drone coverage as a supplement, typically €150 to €400 on top of the session fee. I do not charge for it at all. Whether you book a one-hour couple shoot at €160 or a full wedding day at €800, aerial coverage is included wherever airspace permits, and the aerial frames arrive in the same gallery as everything else.

The reasoning is straightforward. On an island defined by its reef, an aerial photograph is not a bonus deliverable — it is part of photographing the place honestly. Charging separately for it would mean most clients skip it, and then the gallery is missing the one frame that shows where they actually were. Full pricing is published openly; there is no drone line item on it, because there is no drone charge.

Standalone commercial aerial work — hotel and resort property imagery, villa and real-estate aerials, tourism and editorial commissions — is quoted per project, because those need commercial licensing, specific crops and usually a longer flight plan than a portrait session.

+— Handled Before the Day

Drone flight in Mauritius is regulated by the Mauritius Civil Aviation Authority, and permission is required. This is the part visiting photographers and enthusiastic guests with their own drone routinely get wrong: turning up at a resort beach and launching is not legal, and hotels are increasingly quick to stop it.

I confirm the position at your specific venue and time slot before you book, not on the morning. Restrictions cluster around SSR International Airport in the south-east, certain government and port zones, and some protected nature reserves. Separately, individual resorts apply their own rules, often restricting flights over the beach from mid-morning onward out of consideration for other guests; that is a conversation I have with the property directly.

If your location or timing will not permit flying, you will hear it from me at the quoting stage along with the alternative — which is usually as simple as shooting an hour earlier. What you will not get is a promise of aerials that quietly evaporates on the day.

What I Shoot From the Air

Weddings from above. The ceremony seen from directly overhead — guests arranged on the sand, the aisle, the couple at the centre, lagoon filling the frame. I fly during natural pauses so there is never a drone humming through the vows. Included in every wedding booking at no extra cost.

Couples, honeymoons and elopements. Two people alone on an enormous empty beach, shot from height, is the most-requested aerial in my galleries — it does something no ground portrait can, which is show how small and remote and quiet the setting is. Works beautifully for honeymoon sessions, couple shoots and elopements.

Hotels, resorts and property. A hotel's relationship to its beach and lagoon is the most persuasive image it owns, and it only exists from the air. Property overviews, beach frontage, pool and grounds layout, shoreline approach — delivered in landscape and vertical crops for web and social. See hotel and resort photography.

Events. A beach dinner or a gala on a resort lawn photographed from above is usually the frame the client uses everywhere afterwards. Included with event coverage.

Mid-Morning Beats Golden Hour — From the Air

This is counter-intuitive and worth knowing before you plan your day. For ground photography, golden hour wins almost every time: warm light, long shadows, flattering on faces. For aerial photography over a lagoon, the opposite is often true.

Lagoon colour depends on sunlight penetrating the water and reflecting off the sand and coral below. That needs the sun high — roughly 09:00 to 11:00 gives the strongest turquoise and the clearest view of the reef structure. Shoot the same spot at golden hour and the water goes dark and glassy; you get beautiful warm light on the shoreline and lose the colour that made you want the aerial in the first place.

So we choose. If the lagoon is the subject, we fly mid-morning. If the subject is people and the lagoon is context, golden hour still wins and the aerial becomes an atmospheric wide rather than a colour showcase. On wedding days there is usually no choice — the ceremony is when it is — so I plan the aerial around whatever pause the schedule allows and adjust the altitude and angle to suit the light we have.
