I photograph the khutbah, the ijab and qabul, the signing, the moment the imam raises his hands in dua and the room answers ameen — without flash where it would intrude, without direction where the moment should simply be witnessed.

For mosque ceremonies, I coordinate with the imam and the mosque committee in advance: where I may stand, what may be photographed, and how to cover both the men's hall and — where a female photographer joins me — the ladies' section. Years of working inside Mauritian masjids mean this conversation is short, respectful and familiar on both sides.

Where the Walima is segregated, the same gender-considerate options apply — I cover the men's side while a female colleague photographs the ladies' celebration in full, so the bride's gallery is never thinner than the groom's. Where families prefer a mixed reception, I move through it unobtrusively, prioritising the moments that matter: the couple's entrance, the duas before the meal, the elders' blessings, the details your mother spent months planning.
