I'm Bilaal Sadeer, a luxury wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Mauritius. Bel Ombre is one of the locations I return to most often — not because every couple asks for it, but because those who know it understand that the south coast holds something the rest of the island quietly keeps to itself. Bel Ombre occupies the south-west corner of Mauritius in the Savanne district — a stretch of coast that has no tourist strip, no cluster of beach bars, no parasols for hire. What it has instead is the Heritage Resorts group, a nature reserve, a genuinely wild coastline, and the particular quality of south coast light that seems to soften everything it touches without losing its warmth.
The two Heritage properties are the anchor of Bel Ombre, and they create a photographic contrast that is virtually unrivalled on the island within a single location. Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort is built around a colonial plantation-house aesthetic — French Creole architecture, formal gardens of frangipani and bougainvillea, long verandas, the feel of an estate that has existed for generations. Sessions here carry a timelessness that no purpose-built resort can replicate. Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort takes a different direction: more contemporary, more beach-focused, with vast open grounds and direct access to the south coast. Covering a significant area of hills, river valleys, and coastal terrain, the reserve provides outdoor sessions that feel genuinely remote — endemic vegetation, quiet trails, river crossings, viewpoints over the wild south coast. It is the kind of setting that creates photographs looking nothing like typical Mauritius resort imagery, which is precisely its value.
The coastline itself deserves separate mention. The south-west coast at Bel Ombre is not manicured. The beach is not raked at dawn. The vegetation reaches to the shore, and the light — particularly in the late afternoon when the sun begins its swing toward the west — has a quality that photographers from other parts of the island travel south to find. Couple sessions on the beach here in that light are among the most intimate and naturally atmospheric I produce anywhere in Mauritius.
Bel Ombre is also ideally positioned for multi-location days. Twenty minutes north sits Le Morne with its UNESCO-listed cliff and turquoise lagoon. Twenty-five minutes east is Chamarel with its Seven Coloured Earths and waterfall. A morning session in the Heritage grounds and nature reserve, followed by a sunset session at Le Morne, creates two visually distinct galleries in a single day — both within the same south-west corner of the island.

April through November. Consistent clear mornings, lower humidity, reliable conditions for outdoor sessions at the Heritage resorts and nature reserve.

June through October: south-east trade winds pick up by late morning. Morning sessions (7–10am) capture the calm before the breeze — ideal for nature reserve and beach sessions.
Golden Hour
South-west facing. Late afternoon sun (3–5pm) swings toward the west-facing stretches of coast. Heritage Le Telfair plantation grounds are exceptional in morning light.
Green Season
December through March. Lush, vivid vegetation after summer rains. Nature reserve photography is spectacular in this colour. Morning sessions are most reliable; afternoon showers possible.
