Rodrigues sits 560 km north-east of Mauritius, inside one of the largest lagoons in the Indian Ocean. No resort strips. No crowds. Beaches you reach on foot or not at all. I was commissioned to photograph this island — so everything below is a location scout, not a stock library. These are the exact places I would shoot your wedding, your proposal, or your campaign.

Hôtel Flamboyant commissioned me to photograph Rodrigues — their property, and the island around it — to help promote the destination. That meant guest room interiors and food one morning, and a drone over the reef at Trou d'Argent the next.
What I did not expect was how well the island photographs for couples. Rodrigues has something Mauritius largely no longer does: coastline with nobody on it. Beaches with no road to them. Cliffs, caves, a suspension bridge over green valleys, and a lagoon so large the aerials barely look real. On the main island you plan around other people. Here you simply do not have to.
So while I was working, I scouted. Access, walk-in times, where the light lands and when, which spots hold up at midday and which only work at seven in the morning. That is what the sections below are — not a portfolio, a reconnaissance report. And it is why, when someone asks whether I would fly out for a wedding or a proposal on Rodrigues, the answer is straightforward: I have already done the hard part.

Seven Locations on Rodrigues — and What Each One Is For
Access, light and honest assessment. This is what I learned on the ground, not what a tourism brochure says.
Trou d'Argent
The best beach on the island, and it is not close. A white-sand cove enclosed by eroded sandstone cliffs on the wild east coast, with no road access — you walk in along the coastal trail from Graviers, over a log footbridge and down a rocky slope. That walk is exactly why it works: you will almost certainly have it entirely to yourselves.

Torrent
Where Rodrigues stops being pretty and becomes powerful. Limestone shelves, collapsed rock slabs, narrow channels and pocket beaches where the open Indian Ocean surges straight in. Nothing here is sheltered. For couples who do not want a postcard, this is the strongest coastline on the island — and from the air it is extraordinary.

Caverne Patate
A limestone cave system in the south-west, entered under hanging banyan roots and descended by staircase into chambers of stalactites and columns. Visited on a guided tour, so timing has to be arranged rather than assumed. On an island that is otherwise all open sky, it is the one genuinely different frame available.

Pont Suspendu
A suspension footbridge strung across a green valley in the interior, with cattle on the hillsides, agave flower stalks catching the backlight, tropicbirds over the canopy and long views down to the lagoon. The TyRodrig zip line runs alongside it. This is the location that proves Rodrigues is not only a beach destination.

Port Mathurin & Island Life
The capital and the everyday island around it — colonial streetscapes and painted shopfronts, the Noor-ud-Deen mosque, heritage cannons in the gardens, craft shops, churches, fishing pirogues drawn up under the trees, zebu on the hillsides and octopus drying in the sun. The deepest set here at 52 frames, and the backbone of any commercial or tourism brief.

Street Food
Rodrigues eats extremely well and does it in public. Roadside grills under umbrellas, mine frite, gateaux piments and samosas, biryani served hot, noodle soup, Creole snack houses with names like Tirozo and Snack Lagon. Real people, real service, no styling. If you are a hotel, restaurant or tour operator, this is the material that sells the island.

The Lagoon, From the Air
Rodrigues sits inside one of the largest lagoons in the Indian Ocean, and the island only fully makes sense from above — reef lines, turquoise shallows, sandy coves, islets and undeveloped coastline running for kilometres without a building on it. Aerial coverage is included in every Rodrigues mission rather than charged as an extra.

Six Reasons to Bring a Photographer to Rodrigues
Weddings & Elopements
The whole day, or just the two of you on an empty beach. Rodrigues suits small and intentional far better than large and logistical — and if you want a ceremony with nobody else in frame, there are few places left in the Indian Ocean that can still deliver it.
Couple Sessions
Two or three contrasting locations in a day: the secluded cove, the dramatic coast, the green interior. Enough variety that the gallery does not look like one afternoon in one place.
Proposals
Photographed from distance, unseen, then portraits immediately afterwards while it is still sinking in. Trou d'Argent is close to a perfect setting for this — no road, no audience, and a walk in that gives you a reason to be going somewhere.
Honeymoons
Relaxed, unhurried coverage across a couple of days rather than a single posed hour. Rodrigues is where you go when Mauritius already felt too busy.

Getting a Photographer to Rodrigues Is Easier Than It Sounds
Rodrigues lies about 560 km north-east of Mauritius. Air Mauritius flies the route from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) to Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport at Plaine Corail (RRG), normally on an ATR turboprop, in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no ferry option that works around a photography schedule.
Practically, that makes a Rodrigues mission a two or three day trip rather than an expedition. I book my own flights, accommodation and island transport, and it is all folded into one quoted figure — you do not organise anything for me, and nothing is added afterwards. The only thing worth doing early is fixing the date: flights are limited and island accommodation is small-scale, so both fill up long before my calendar does.
Weather, Season & Light on Rodrigues
Sep – Nov
The strongest window. Warm, comparatively dry, clean light and good water clarity for aerials.
Apr – May
The second window. Settling weather after the wet season, quieter island, very workable light.
Jun – Aug
Cooler and windier. Excellent for dramatic coastal work at Torrent, less comfortable for beach sessions.
Jan – Mar
Cyclone season — hotter, wetter, less predictable. Best avoided unless your dates are already fixed.
Rodrigues is drier and windier than the main island. On the east coast the wind is a feature, not a problem — it is what makes the surf at Torrent worth photographing.

Rodrigues has no resort strip. Accommodation is small-scale — hotels, guesthouses and family-run chambres d'hôtes — which is a large part of why the island still feels the way it does. Book well ahead.
Hôtel Flamboyant commissioned the photography on this page, so I know the property from the inside — I photographed the guest rooms, the food and the grounds. It sits close to Port Mathurin, which makes it a practical base for reaching both coasts within a working day.
