I'm Bilaal Sadeer, a luxury wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Mauritius. Chamarel is one of my most treasured locations — and one that I know intimately. I've spent fifteen years learning where the light falls on the Seven Coloured Earths at different times of year, which forest paths lead to the waterfall's best viewpoint, and how morning mist transforms the plateau into something otherworldly.

The Seven Coloured Earths (Terres des Sept Couleurs) are a geological wonder — volcanic dunes striped in shades of violet, red, brown, green, blue, purple, and yellow. No two patches of earth look the same. No filter is needed. The colours simply exist, impossibly vivid, and they provide a backdrop for photography that is frankly unlike anywhere else in the Indian Ocean.
The Chamarel Waterfall — at approximately 80 metres, the tallest on the island — cascades through a gorge of dense tropical forest. Early morning sessions here, when mist rises from the valley below, create images of extraordinary atmosphere. Dry Season
May through November. Clear skies, low humidity, consistent golden-hour light. Best overall conditions for outdoor photography at Chamarel.
Wet Season
December through April. Afternoon showers are common. Morning sessions (before 10am) are reliable. Mist and lush green create dramatic atmosphere.
Golden Hour
Sunset ranges from 17:30 (June) to 19:00 (January). The plateau's western-facing terrain catches the last warm light beautifully, especially near the waterfall gorge.
Morning Mist
Year-round, especially October through February. Sunrise sessions in mist produce cinematic, layered images. The waterfall is most dramatic in the cool morning air.
Temperature
Chamarel stays 3–5°C cooler than the coast. Comfortable for shooting even in summer. Light layers recommended for evening sessions in the dry season.

June through September for most reliable conditions. October–November for lush green post-rains. April–May for a balance of both.
