I'm Bilaal Sadeer, a luxury wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Mauritius. Rivière des Galets — River of Pebbles — is a coastal area in the Rivière Noire district on the west coast of Mauritius where the Black River, descending from the Black River Gorges National Park, meets the Indian Ocean. Rivière des Galets sits on the west coast, sheltered from the south-east trade winds by the Black River Gorges ridgeline. This creates a distinctive microclimate that differs significantly from the east and north coasts.
Dry Season (May–October)
The south-east trade winds are blocked by the gorge ridgeline, keeping the west coast calmer and drier than the rest of the island. Clearer skies and lower humidity. Excellent overall conditions for outdoor photography.
Wet Season (Nov–April)
Warmer and more humid. Afternoon showers possible, especially December through March. Morning sessions (7–10am) are strongly recommended during summer. The gorge backdrop turns intensely green and lush after rain.
Golden Hour
West-facing beach receives the full westerly sunset. Golden hour begins approximately one hour before sunset and intensifies dramatically in the final 20 minutes. The pebbles turn from grey to warm amber — the most distinctive light condition at this location.
Morning Light
7–10am for calm river mouth conditions and warm directional east light on the gorge face. The pebble beach is at its most tranquil before midday. Morning sessions are recommended for couples who want a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere.

West coast temperatures range from 20°C (July–August) to 30°C (January–February). The gorge ridgeline provides partial afternoon shade and the sea breeze keeps coastal temperatures comfortable. Summer morning sessions avoid the heat of midday.

June through October for reliable dry conditions, lower humidity, and clear skies. April and November transitional — often the most dramatic light with passing clouds. Year-round for the pebble beach and river mouth compositions.
