The Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice church, built in 1938 from coral stone and capped with its now-famous red roof, is the defining landmark of Cap Malheureux and one of the most instantly recognisable images in the entire Indian Ocean region. It has been photographed from every angle, in every light, by visitors from every continent — and yet it never becomes cliché, because the combination of elements is simply too extraordinary: the vivid red roof, the turquoise water, and the volcanic silhouette of Coin de Mire island floating eight kilometres offshore. No filter can improve what nature and history have assembled here. The photographer's job is only to position the couple within it correctly and to wait for the right light.

Coin de Mire (its English name is Gunner's Coin — a navigational term from the era of sail) is a nature reserve and cannot be landed upon, but its presence as a backdrop is constant and dramatic. From the church grounds and the adjacent coastline, it fills the horizon with volcanic texture.
