Blue Bay Marine Park is one of my most extraordinary photography locations — and one that demands a particular kind of knowledge. I've spent years learning how the Ramsar-protected lagoon behaves across the seasons, when the water runs glassiest, how the coral patterns read from drone altitude at different times of day, and which tidal conditions produce the clearest in-water frames. This is not a location you can approach without preparation.

Blue Bay sits on the south-east coast of Mauritius in the Mahébourg area — a short drive from SSR International Airport, yet occupying a world entirely its own. The Blue Bay Marine Park is a Ramsar Convention wetland site, meaning it carries international ecological recognition for the richness and rarity of what lies beneath its surface. That protection is the reason the water is so extraordinarily clear and the coral so vibrantly alive.
From the air, the marine park produces some of the most visually compelling drone photography in the entire Indian Ocean. Blue Bay's south-east facing coastline creates conditions distinct from the west — strong trade winds in June–August can affect lagoon surface conditions. Understanding the seasonal and daily rhythm is essential for optimal marine park photography.
Dry Season
May through November. Clear skies, minimal rainfall, best marine park water clarity. Optimal conditions for drone coral reef photography and in-water sessions.
Wet Season
December through March. Occasional rains can temporarily reduce water clarity. Morning sessions before rainfall are excellent. Lush green surroundings and dramatic cloud light.
Sunrise Sessions
East-facing location produces extraordinary morning light — rose-gold tones on crystal lagoon water. Lagoon is glassiest at sunrise before trade winds build. Recommended for in-water and beach portraits.
Water Clarity
Marine park protection produces exceptional clarity year-round. Clearest May–November when rainfall is minimal. Best drone coral reef visibility in dry season morning conditions.
