There are beautiful beaches all around Mauritius. Trou aux Biches is the one that appears in the guides, on the travel posters, in the Pinterest boards of couples who have never visited the island but already know exactly where they want their honeymoon photograph taken. That reputation is not marketing — it is geography. The bay is naturally sheltered, which keeps the lagoon consistently calm. The sand is fine and white. The water is shallow enough to walk 100 metres from shore and still feel the bottom beneath your feet, and in those shallows, the colour of the water — an almost impossibly pale, clear turquoise — is unlike anything produced by deeper ocean.
Photographically, that shallow lagoon is the defining feature. As the afternoon progresses and the sun begins its descent toward the western horizon, the light that falls on Trou aux Biches beach transforms. By 4pm, it is warm gold. By 4:30pm, it sits precisely on the water surface, creating a horizontal shimmer that turns every image cinematic. The sun sets over the ocean here — not behind land, not obscured by trees — which means the full golden-hour arc is uninterrupted and extraordinarily long. Couples who arrive at 3:30pm and stay until after sunset leave with images that span multiple distinct moods of light: blue-white afternoon clarity, warm gold, deep amber, and finally the violet-rose of dusk.

Dry Season
May through November. Clear skies, low humidity, consistent blue-sky conditions. The classic Mauritius turquoise-and-white image is most reliably achieved in this period.
Golden Hour Light
North-west facing beach catches the setting sun directly. Golden hour from approximately 4pm. Sunset ranges from 17:40 (June) to 19:00 (December). Sun sets over the ocean — unobstructed.
Lagoon Conditions
Exceptionally shallow and calm year-round. Reef-protected bay keeps the water still. In-water sessions are viable almost every day. Clearest visibility in May–October.
Trade Wind
North-west trade winds in dry season keep the air fresh and the sky clear. Light breeze on the beach adds natural movement to dresses and hair — often an asset for photography.
Wet Season
December through April. Afternoon showers possible. Morning sessions (before 11am) are reliable. The lagoon remains calm and the light can be softly dramatic before rain.
Best Months
June through October for peak conditions. May and November for shoulder-season reliability. Late afternoon sessions (3pm–sunset) recommended year-round for best lagoon light.
