Over fifteen years, I have learned precisely where the afternoon light falls on the stone walls of the French colonial ruins, how the trade winds affect the lagoon surface at different hours, and which angles of the marine park create the most extraordinary drone compositions. This bay is not large, but it contains multitudes.
What separates a Balaclava session with a local photographer from a session with a visiting one is this: I understand the tides, the marine park permit process, the specific resort access protocols at Anelia and the Hilton, and the precise window each day when the lagoon light shifts from blue-green to liquid gold. Balaclava sits quietly on the north-west coast of Mauritius, sheltered from the open ocean by a barrier reef that has protected its waters for centuries. Most visitors to the north coast gravitate towards the well-known resorts of Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches. Balaclava remains less publicised — and that is precisely what makes it so remarkable for photography. The bay has retained a sense of scale and stillness that the busier stretches of the north coast have long lost.
The defining characteristic of Balaclava is its marine national park status. This legal protection means the lagoon has never suffered the degradation that affects unprotected coastal waters. The result is a lagoon of extraordinary clarity — deep turquoise over living coral reefs, pale aquamarine over white sand, and a colour palette that requires no enhancement in post-production. For drone photography, the aerial view of the coral reef patterns beneath the surface is unlike anywhere else on the north coast. For in-water couple photography, the visibility and calm make it one of the safest and most beautiful locations on the island.
What makes Balaclava truly unique, however, is the presence of the French colonial ruins. The remnants of an 18th-century fortification — stone walls, archways, the outline of former chambers — stand within walking distance of the beach. No other north coast location offers this combination of historical architecture and tropical marine backdrop. The ruins introduce texture, depth, and a cinematic weight to couple portraits that the beach alone cannot provide. A session at Balaclava is the only session on the north coast where you can move from ancient stone corridors to in-lagoon couple photography within the same golden hour.

Balaclava faces north-west, which in Mauritius means long, generous golden hours. Sunset times range from around 17:40 in June to 19:00 in December, and the low angle of the late-day sun creates a warm raking light that illuminates the stone ruins from the side, pools on the lagoon surface, and bathes resort terraces in amber. Afternoon sessions here rarely disappoint — the bay collects light beautifully, and the combination of stone, water, coral, and sky gives every frame a natural depth of field that is simply not possible to replicate anywhere else on the north coast.

Trade Winds
May to October trade winds from the south-east keep the protected lagoon calm and the sky clear. The bay's sheltered position buffers wind effects significantly compared to exposed beaches.
Wet Season
December through April. Warmer temperatures, occasional afternoon showers. Morning sessions (6–9am) are most reliable. The lagoon remains strikingly calm and clear even in the wet season.
Best Months
June to September for peak water clarity — ideal for drone and in-lagoon sessions. May and October–November offer excellent conditions with fewer peak-season visitors on the beach.
