I'm Bilaal Sadeer, a luxury photographer based in Mauritius with fifteen years of experience across every coastline and region on the island. La Prairie holds a special place in my work — it is the location I turn to when couples want something genuinely unlike any resort beach. Over more than a decade of returning to this wild stretch of south-west coast, I have learned every viewpoint, every rock formation that catches the light at golden hour, and every safe position for drone work above the open ocean. South of La Gaulette, the south-west coast of Mauritius undergoes a transformation. The fishing village, the kite-surfing lagoon, the resort cluster around Le Morne — all of it falls away. Trade Wind Season
May through October. South-east trades bring reliable clear skies, dramatic cloud formations, and the most powerful swell on the open ocean coast. Best overall period for La Prairie's volcanic scenery.
Ocean Swell
Swell from the open Indian Ocean is most dramatic from June to September. Wave action on the volcanic rocks creates spectacular natural spray — a unique photographic element unavailable on the lagoon side of the island.
Golden Hour
South-west facing coast. Prime golden light arrives 3–5pm throughout the year. The sun tracks across the volcanic rock turning it from dark grey to warm amber. Sunset times range from 17:30 (June) to 19:10 (January).
Morning Calm
7–10am delivers soft diffused light, calm ocean conditions, and complete solitude. No wind yet, no swell spray — a quiet, intimate mood very different from the drama of afternoon. Excellent for romantic and honeymoon sessions.
Temperature
The exposed open-coast position keeps temperatures slightly cooler than the island's north. Range: 18°C (July–August) to 28°C (January–February). Trade wind season keeps humidity low and conditions comfortable.
Best Months
April through October for dramatic ocean conditions and clear skies. June–September for maximum swell and powerful wave photography. November–March for morning sessions — lush surroundings, calm sea, warm early light.
I monitor ocean conditions and wind forecasts for every session at La Prairie. If swell is exceptionally high on a planned morning session, I will adjust to afternoon to take advantage of it rather than avoid it. La Prairie rewards flexibility — I will always maximise what the conditions offer.
