I'm Bilaal Sadeer, a luxury wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Mauritius. Bain Bœuf is one of the locations I return to most, precisely because it is the one that most visitors — and most photographers — never find. It requires local knowledge to access at the right time, and an understanding of how the morning light falls across the cove from the east before the wind picks up.
Over fifteen years photographing across every corner of this island, I've learned that the most powerful images rarely come from the most famous beaches. They come from places like Bain Bœuf — where the crystal water is undisturbed, the islands on the horizon create a natural three-dimensional backdrop, and the couple in front of my lens feel genuinely alone in the world. That feeling is what I work to preserve in every frame.
My role at Bain Bœuf, as everywhere, is to be invisible. The logistics — transfers, permits, timing, light conditions — are handled entirely by me in advance. By the time you arrive at the cove, every detail is already in place. You simply experience the place. I capture what happens.

Bain Bœuf sits on the north-east coast of Mauritius, tucked between Cap Malheureux and Grand Gaube in a natural embrace of rock and reef that has kept it largely invisible to mainstream tourism. The name translates from Creole as "Ox Bath" — a reference to its historical use as a watering point — but nothing about the name prepares you for the visual experience. The water here is a shade of turquoise that photographers travel across the Indian Ocean to find. It is not filtered. It is not enhanced. It simply exists in that colour, over white sand, in a cove that the sea has been perfecting for millennia.
What distinguishes Bain Bœuf from every other north coast location is the simultaneous presence of multiple offshore islands on the horizon. Coin de Mire, the dramatic volcanic cone that dominates the northern skyline, is visible to the west. Flat Island and Gabriel Island — both uninhabited nature reserves — appear to the north-east. On clear mornings, all three islands are visible from a single position within the cove, creating a backdrop of extraordinary depth: water in the foreground, islands in the middle distance, open Indian Ocean sky beyond. No studio backdrop achieves this. No other cove on the north coast offers it.
The seclusion is genuine. Bain Bœuf has limited public access and receives a fraction of the visitor numbers of Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, or even Cap Malheureux. Early morning sessions here — which benefit from the cove's north-east orientation catching the first light — are conducted in near-complete solitude. This is the rarest gift a photography location can offer: the sense that the world has been paused, and the couple before the lens are its only inhabitants.
