This is not unique to Mauritius — it is true of most small island markets — but it creates a situation where an eighteen-year-old with a borrowed kit and a professional with €15,000 of camera equipment and fifteen years of experience can both describe themselves as "photographers in Mauritius" and charge rates anywhere from €40 to €300 per hour.

The quality range is correspondingly wide. I have seen couples show me galleries they received from other photographers — blurred images, flat exposure, Instagram-filter editing that dates immediately, and 22 photos from a two-hour session. I have also seen extraordinary work from independent photographers who are simply less visible online.

Three factors make the pricing particularly confusing for visitors:

• Hidden costs: A low headline rate often excludes drone (€80–€150 extra), editing (sometimes charged per image), travel outside the photographer's home area (€20–€50 each way), and delivery — the quoted price is not the final price.
• Hotel recommendations and commissions: Many 5-star hotels in Mauritius have preferred photographer lists. What guests do not always know is that these lists can involve a referral commission of 20–40% paid by the photographer to the hotel. The guest pays a higher rate; the photographer receives less; the hotel keeps the difference. This is not universal, but it is common. Always ask the hotel whether they receive a commission from their recommended photographer, and always feel free to book independently.
• Unregulated descriptions: "Professional photographer" in Mauritius has no legal meaning. Look for verifiable Google reviews, a complete portfolio of actual Mauritius locations, and transparent pricing in writing.

A professional camera body in 2026 costs between €2,500 and €5,000. Lenses — a 35mm prime, a 85mm portrait lens, a 24–70mm zoom — add another €4,000–€8,000 to the kit. A professional-grade drone (DJI Mavic 3 Pro or equivalent) is €2,200–€2,500. Add memory cards, batteries, filters, bags, straps, and a second backup body (which any professional should carry), and a serious photographer's kit represents an investment of €15,000–€20,000 — before accounting for the annual maintenance, replacements and upgrades that keep the equipment in peak condition. Entry-level photographers working with consumer-grade equipment cannot produce the same image quality in low light, cannot get the same subject separation from professional lenses, and cannot offer drone coverage at all.

Editing time

A one-hour photography session typically produces 300–600 raw images. Professional retouching — colour grading, exposure correction, skin retouching, sky optimisation, removing distracting elements — takes 4–6 hours for a one-hour shoot. Transport and logistics

Mauritius is 65 kilometres long and 45 kilometres wide — but driving from the north to the south takes 50–70 minutes depending on traffic. A photographer based in Grand Baie who is shooting at Le Morne has an hour and a half of driving time (round trip), fuel costs, and the logistical commitment of knowing the roads, the parking, the beach access points and the permit requirements for each location. Island-wide transfers are included in my pricing because I believe clients should not be penalised for choosing a location far from where a photographer happens to live.

Experience and local knowledge

Knowing where the light falls at 5:30 pm at Le Morne in June, understanding which beaches have restricted drone zones, knowing the tide cycle for Belle Mare, having relationships with hotel concierge teams — this knowledge is built over years and cannot be replaced by talent alone. How to Book

2. Availability check — I reply within a few hours to confirm whether your date is available. If it is, I send a quote with the exact package and total cost.
3. Date confirm — once you confirm the date, time and location, I hold a provisional booking for 48 hours while you arrange the deposit.
4. Pay €80 deposit via PayPal — send €80 to paypal.me/bilaalsadeer. Your date is confirmed and locked as soon as payment is received. The deposit is deducted from the total on the day.
5. The shoot — I arrive at the agreed location on time. Sessions typically run slightly longer than booked because I do not cut sessions short if the light is still good.
6. Gallery delivery — within 3 working days you receive a link to a private Google Drive gallery with all retouched photos available for immediate download.

The whole process from first message to confirmed booking typically takes less than 24 hours. For groups, weddings or multi-day events, I schedule a short call to discuss the logistics in more detail — but that is optional and only for complex bookings.

Red Flags When Hiring a Photographer in Mauritius

After 15 years in this market I know exactly which patterns indicate a photographer who will disappoint. Here are the seven warning signs to watch for:

1. No Google reviews, or very few. A photographer who has been working in Mauritius for more than a year should have a visible Google Business profile with genuine reviews. Absence of reviews means either very new, or very few repeat clients. Neither is reassuring for a once-in-a-lifetime shoot.
2. Identical preset editing across the entire portfolio. If every photo in a portfolio has the same orange-teal colour grade regardless of lighting conditions, time of day or location, the photographer is applying a single Instagram-style preset to every image rather than individually editing each photo. This produces a dated, uniform look that will not age well.
3. No drone, or drone charged as a costly extra. Any serious photographer working in Mauritius in 2026 should own a drone. If drone is not available or is quoted as €80–€150 extra, this is a significant signal about the level of investment the photographer has made in their equipment.
4. Cash only, with no written confirmation. Cash-only arrangements with no booking confirmation, no invoice and no paper trail are high-risk for visitors. If a photographer cancels at the last minute and there is no written record of the booking, you have very limited recourse.
5. No contract or booking confirmation. Related to the above: a professional photographer should send you a written confirmation of the date, time, location, package, price and payment terms before your session. If there is no written confirmation, the terms of the booking exist only in a WhatsApp chat thread.
6. Delivery time quoted as 4+ weeks. Four-week delivery means your photos arrive after you are back home, after the social media moment has passed, and with no ability to request changes. Longer delivery times are not a sign of careful editing — they are a sign of either a high volume of bookings that the photographer cannot service, or a lack of urgency about the client's experience.
7. No portfolio of actual Mauritius locations. A photographer whose portfolio consists entirely of beach images that could have been taken anywhere — flat light, no location context, no recognisable Mauritius backgrounds — may not have the local knowledge to find and use the island's best light and locations. Ask to see photos from specific locations: Le Morne, Belle Mare, Trou aux Biches. If they cannot show you work from those places, they may not know them.
