Why Mon Choisy is the Perfect Proposal Beach

Most couples instinctively think of Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches for a Mauritius proposal — they are famous, beautiful, and the hotels there are excellent. But for a truly intimate, genuinely private proposal with extraordinary photography, Mon Choisy consistently produces better results. Here is why.

The casuarina trees are the single most important element. The trees grow directly onto the sand in a near-continuous line along the beach, creating a natural corridor of dappled shade. For proposal photography, this is exceptional — I position myself within the tree line and become effectively invisible. Even from 15 metres, I blend into the shadows and needle patterns of the casuarinas. No artificial concealment, no crouching behind a beach umbrella — just the natural landscape doing the work. The trees also mean that even on a busy day, there are naturally private pockets of beach where you can propose without bystanders in the frame.

Mon Choisy is also significantly quieter than Grand Baie. It is a local beach, used primarily by Mauritians, with none of the tourist-vendor noise and boat traffic that makes Grand Baie less intimate. In the late afternoon — the golden hour window — the beach is typically calm and unhurried. There is a stillness here that Grand Baie, for all its beauty, simply cannot offer.

Finally, the light. Mon Choisy faces north-west. The sun sets directly across the beach in the late afternoon, washing the casuarina trunks amber, turning the lagoon a deeper shade of turquoise, and creating conditions where every photograph looks as though it was lit by a professional team. It cannot be manufactured. It has to be found — and Mon Choisy has it in abundance.

The Moment — Captured from the Casuarina Trees

This is a real proposal I photographed at Mon Choisy. I was in the tree line, approximately 50 metres away, with a telephoto lens. Neither of them knew I was there until the ring was out. The drone footage that follows was shot immediately after, during the couple session.

How the Hidden Proposal Photographer Works

Keeping a surprise proposal truly secret requires a plan that runs entirely through the proposer, not the partner. Here is how every Mon Choisy proposal I photograph is structured.

Before the session: You contact me privately via WhatsApp. Your partner does not need to know anything — the session is booked in your name only. We agree a cover story ("a sunset walk", or "a photographer someone recommended to us" are both commonly used) and a briefing call where you tell me the timing, your walking direction, and roughly when you plan to propose. I survey the beach in advance and identify my exact position.

On the day: I arrive at Mon Choisy 20–30 minutes before you. I position myself in the casuarina tree line, typically 40–60 metres from where you will be. A 400mm telephoto lens gives me the equivalent of a professional studio close-up from that distance — the images are sharp, emotionally immediate, and look nothing like paparazzi shots. I stay in contact with you only via a pre-agreed code message, typically something that would never attract your partner's attention if they saw your screen.

The moment: As you prepare to propose, I switch to continuous shooting — frames from the approach, the pause, the ring box opening, the reaction, the yes. The drone launches quietly afterwards for the aerial couple portraits. At no point am I close enough to create pressure or self-consciousness in the moment itself.

The reveal: After the proposal, I walk over and introduce myself. In every proposal I have photographed, the partner has been delighted once they understood what had happened. The session then continues naturally as a couple portrait session — with the best light still ahead of you.

The Three Best Proposal Spots at Mon Choisy

1. The Casuarina Tree Line — Most Popular

The stretch of beach at the tree line's edge — where the casuarina shade meets the open sand — is the most popular and most successful spot. Light here at golden hour is extraordinary: warm, dappled, flattering from every angle. I hide in the trees themselves, sometimes as close as 20 metres, completely invisible. The tree backdrop in the photographs looks organic and beautiful rather than staged. Walk to the middle-northern section, approximately 400 metres from the main car park.

2. The Lagoon Edge — Most Romantic

The Mon Choisy lagoon is exceptionally calm and clear. Walking into ankle-deep water and proposing there — the horizon ahead, amber light behind, the casuarinas framing the left side of the frame — produces images of extraordinary beauty. The reflection of the sky on the water's surface, the intimacy of being "in" the lagoon rather than on dry sand, and the colour of the water at golden hour cannot be replicated anywhere else on the north coast. I shoot this from the dry beach with a low telephoto angle to catch the water reflections.

3. The North End — Quietest

The northern end of Mon Choisy, beyond the main beach activity, is substantially quieter with a longer uninterrupted stretch of clean white sand. If you want the most private, undisturbed experience with minimal risk of other beachgoers appearing in the frame, this is the spot. Less dense tree cover means I use dune grass and beach vegetation for concealment. Walk approximately 600–700 metres north of the car park.

Timing Your Proposal — Golden Hour at Mon Choisy

Mon Choisy faces north-west. This is decisive. The golden-hour window falls in the late afternoon, when the sun moves towards the western horizon and the light turns warm and directional. The precise window changes with the season:

• May–July: Golden hour begins around 4:30pm, peaks 5:00–5:30pm.
• August–October: Begins around 5:00pm, peaks 5:30–6:00pm.
• November–January: Begins around 5:30pm, peaks 6:00–6:30pm.
• February–April: Begins around 5:00pm, peaks 5:30–6:00pm.

I monitor the precise sunset time for your date and will tell you exactly when to arrive. The beach is noticeably quieter in the late afternoon than at midday, and the light requires no filters, no reflectors, and no artificial equipment — the island simply delivers it.

The best months for a Mon Choisy proposal are May through November — Mauritius's dry season. Clear skies, consistent trade winds, and the most reliable golden-hour light. December through March is the wet season: mornings are typically clear, but afternoon showers are possible. For a golden-hour proposal, a dry-season booking eliminates all weather uncertainty.

After the Proposal: The Couple Session

The moment of the question — the ring, the reaction, the yes — lasts perhaps three to five minutes. But that is only the beginning of your time at Mon Choisy. After the reveal, there are 60–90 minutes of golden light left, and we use every minute of it.

The couple session that follows a surprise proposal is, in my experience, the most naturally beautiful part of the entire booking. There is no self-consciousness, no awkwardness about posing — your partner has just said yes, you are both genuinely ecstatic, and the light is perfect. I guide the session loosely: a walk along the casuarina tree line, wading into the lagoon, a moment under the trees. The drone goes up for the aerial couple portrait. We watch the sun touch the horizon together.
